a smart Aleck
Dear teachers,
Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?
“Now, who would do it but that little Finchley snip, the little smart Aleck?” snapped Gilbert. (Th. Dreiser, An American Tragedy”)
In the little towns, ah, there is the abiding peace that I love, and that can never be disturbed by even the noisiest smart Alecks from these haughty megalopolises like Washington, New-York, etc. (S. Lewes, “It Can’t Happen Here”)
a smart Aleck = self-confident impudent fellow, unceremonious fellow
Thank you for your efforts.
Regards,
V
