    Which one of these terms are more common in American english

    One quick way to give yourself an idea is to search in Google with double inverted commas around the words:
    "Smart ass" 594,000
    "Smarty pants" 156,000
    "Smart aleck" 84,500
    "Smart alec" 56,400

    This suggests that 'smart ass' is the winner.
