You might say she took the hit for me.
Did she actually misplace them? If she did, then she went to bat. If she is lying to cover your mistake, she took the hit.
Usually, people in greater position of authority go to bat for you. Secretaries don't much influence in that regard. (Never mind that they are actually the power behind the throne.)
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
