pitch in phrasal verb

Dear teachers,

I tried to use pitch in in a sentence that I have stumbled across and would like to know if they are correct.


> I want to thank my friends who were pitched in in transferring all of my stuff when I moved in to another flat last week. It wouldn't have been done easily without your help.

> I remember when there was a vehicular accident when a bus toppled over, even the staff of other departments in the hospital were all pitched in to help in the Emergency Room.

The verb is "to pitch in", not "to be pitched in."
