You could start by making sure you have a solid base from which to start. Here's a good list. There are news articles on this site. You can listen to MP3 recordings as well. You can listen for words that are new, or you can read words that are new.

Find short articles to read. Do a search in "Google News". If you're studying on your own, find something that you are really interested in to read. In a classroom, one doesn't always have a choice of reading material. Keep a vocabulary notebook.
