Default wait vs. await?

Hello everybody
Is the meaning of the verb "to await" different in any way from that of "to wait"?
Thanks in advance for your answer

Default Re: wait vs. await?

It doesn't require the preposition 'for' and is more formal- you wouldn't normally say 'I was awaiting the bus'.
