Which would be the correct answer in this case?

Why would he not come with us? He a) doesn´t / b) didn´t know we left.

Could you use both?

a) meaning that we have just left, he didn't know it at the time and he still doesn't because nobody has told him? This is happening right now as we are talking about it.

b) meaning that this happened yesterday so today he knows but he didn't at the time being.

I cannot answer your question, but I am responding because (a) maybe

a teacher will answer, and (b) I would feel comfortable

using that question only in this way:

Martha: Did you invite George to come with us?

Tony: No.

Martha: Why not?

Tony: I did not think that he would like to come with us.

Martha: Why would he not [like to] come with us [if we invited him]?

Tony: Because he knows that Mona is also coming with us, and

he dislikes Mona.

a) The part in bold, yes. It's LOGICAL that if he still doesn't know that your departure was recent, but it's not required.
b) The part in bold, yes. You don't know whether he now knows. What's important is that he didn't know at the time.
