doll up/ soup and fish
Dear teachers,
Would you help to me to make the proper choice of the meaning of the expressions in bold in the following sentence?
Go home and doll up in your soup and fish, Paul, and wipe that worried look off your map. Tonight we gamble. (E. S. Gardner, “The Case of the Dangerous Dowager.”)
doll up = dress up, put on one’s Sunday best
soup and fish = evening men’s clothes
Thanks for your efforts.
Regards,
V
