At long last, I have found the adjective for the phrase "it's sad but true".
It is gritty.
Am I right?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
'Gritty' involves an honesty about unpleasantness. It may at times come close to 'sad but true', but not always.
A sad but true story of a pensioner about to be evicted from her house discovering that she has won the lottery, only to lose her ticket, is not gritty.
