Default Re: some difficult sentences

1) guess it takes one to know one.

You say this to Person A when Person A tells you about Person B who is just like person A.

My friend Tom, who drinks too much beer, says, "Robert, stay away from Bill, he drinks too much beer."
I say, "Well, it takes one, to know one." (A drinker can see another drinker very easily. A thief can see a thief better than I can.)

2) you look like a million bucks.

You are beautiful, you are handsome, you are gorgeous.. you look like you would cost one million dollars (bucks)

3) she put you on.

She lied to you; she told you a story that was not true, and you believed her.

Tom: My girlfriend told me that she does not have a husband.
Me: Tom, she is putting you on; I know she is married.
Tom: No, she is telling me the truth!
Me: I am sorry, my friend, but she put you on.

hindsight is 20/20.

Hindsight means looking behind you in time.
"Tom, you got a bad grade in school. Think about last year in school, and tell me what you did wrong."
"Well, in hindsight, I think I did not work hard enough last year."

20/20 is an eye test a doctor gives you. If you "see 20/20" you see perfectly.

So, Hindsight is 20/20 means,
"AFTER a thing is finished, it is easy to look back into the past and know what you did wrong. It is much harder to know what you are doing wrong in the present."

"Should we have started the war?"
"Well, now I think it was a mistake, but hindsight is 20/20, when it started I thought it was right. Only now can I look back in time and see it was a mistake."

If you cannot take the heat, get out of the kitchen

Kitchens are hot when you cook in them. Everyone knows that. If you do not like heat, do not cook, do not be in the kitchen. If you can't stand (don't like, cannot be in) the heat, then go away from the kitchen!

So, you say this when someone complains about something that everyone knows.

Tom: "I do not like going to school. They make you read a lot of books."
Me: "If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Everyone knows that you have to read a lot of books in school."

April showers bring May flower

In the USA, it rains a lot in April. People do not like so much rain. BUT, we know that because of the rain in April, in May, we will have good flowers, good plants, good farms. The rain is not fun, but it brings good things.

So, say this to a person when something bad happens, but you know good things will come.

Tom: "I am working very hard in school!"
Me: "I know, but April showers bring May flowers. Because you work so hard today, you will be very, very smart tomorrow!"
