    Smile defy

Please check out the following sentences. In #1, if the verb "defy" is replaced by "resist", will it be better?

    (1) To defy the chilly weather , I plan to buy some warm, protective clothes.
    (2) However, I'm undecided about whether to buy a down coat or a fleece one.
