Garbage Dumping System???

Hi,

I'm translating a document and I need the English equivalent of some word. I haven't found this in any other source.

In some apartment buildings, there is a channel or system or something like that which allows the residents who live on the top floors to dump the garbage without climbing down the stairs and putting it in a garbage dump (??). I would like to know the name of this channel or system. Could anyone please help me with this? (A friend has suggested "garbage shooting system". Is this correct?)

Also, what is the name of the machine which compressors or compacts garbage and is used in apartment buildings?

I would really appreciate any help on this.

Note the spelling. The pronunciation is still /ʃu:t/ (as for 'shoot'), but the spelling has a 'ch' (as does its relative, 'parachute' - which stops the wearer from falling.)
