Default poor performance in english language in undergraduates

pls i would like to know some of the reasons and effects of poor performances in the english language amongst undregraduates most especially in nigeria.

The reasons vary from country to country, but often undergraduates have language training, but lack the spec`ific skills for university work. They might find listening to hour-long lectures something they have never done before and may lack training in skills like writing extended essays in an academic style.
