I was wondering if someone could tell me whether it's possible to say "save yourself'. A friend of mine was describing a movie she had seen. Not knowing the words 'escape' or 'get away', she ended up with 'save yourself":

The divers got trapped in the cave, but the main hero managed to save himself.

It looks fine from a grammatical point of view, but the lexical aspect is questionable.

No, this is quite normal to say that people have saved themselves.
It's generally expressed as above, "... he managed to save himself", or "The flood waters rose, but he was able to save himself by clinging to a tree".
