Would you share with me your opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

It is more like a stage village then one built of bricks and mortar. Every house is smothered in roses, and now, in early June, they were bursting fort in clouds of dainty splendor.

stage village = scenic village = theatrical village (scenery)

stage = scenically

smother = cover, envelop completely
