Default two questions

Hi teacher:

Could you please tell me the meanings of the bracketed parts?

1. Although the distance between them was something less than two
hundred miles, [the train meandered to points far out of the way.]

2. His sister won fifty dollars [at a movie bank night].

Thanks a lot.

1. The distance between them was about 200 miles (as the crow flies).
The course the train took was not a straightforward line, the train sort of zig zagged, moved back and forth through different stops, went in all different directions.
2. I am not sure what that means... a bank was sponsoring a movie?
