    Default In or At

How to say correctly: in the doorway or at the doorway?
I always write 'at..." but some people use "in...".
    Thank you.

I'm not a native, but I'd normally say in the doorway.

I'd say that in should be used on a local scale:

"I'm in the garden. Where are you?"
"I'm in the house." (local scale)

And at should be used on a larger scale:

"Where are you?" (large scale, they don't know where you are)
    "I'm at the shopping mall."
    "In which shop?"
"In Starbucks." (local scale, they already know you're in the shopping mall)

Hence, it's in the doorway as it'll only be on a local scale.

In the songs I hear "at the doorway".

Thinking about it it depends on what type of doorway you are talking about. If it's a 'regular' doorway, I'd use in.

But it would make sense to use "I'll meet you at the doorway to Heaven" or something else like that.
