"clearing of the mind"?

Hi all,
Could anyone please tell me what "clearing" means in the following extract from a text about praying? The person (an atheist) is referring to what he says or has in mind (something he might call prayer) when he needs help or something like that.


'I wouldn’t call it meditation, because it’s definitely a dialogue, an organisation, rather than a clearing of the mind. I may not have a clear vision of who I’m talking to, but that doesn’t make the practice any less valuable.'

I'm not a teacher. Often, the mind is thinking of something. To clear your mind, you must focus on the concept of nothing. Nothing is a void of anything.

As I understand it, in meditation, clearing the mind means; to not follow one's thoughts. I studied and practised meditation for many years in India. I can give you further information if you want, but not here. (It has little to do with language).
