- For Teachers
There seems to be a misconception that you can’t say ‘the day before’, and a secondary school student even told me that his teacher told him that this is/was incorrect!
Which verb should I use? I believe it is 'was'. However, I wonder whether "is' is fine since the belief still exists.

You could use "was." There is no real big difference in meaning here. It "was" incorrect and it still "is" incorrect.
I am not a teacher.
What everyone here has said is true, but I would say "was" if I didn't stop to think, and I think it is stylistically preferable.
Many thanks to all the members who responded to my post.
