    I look round and see that we've got more people watching us than are watching the bears.

    I 'm not sure the word "are" is necessary here? Is it ok without it? Pls.

    It is acceptable without 'are'. Even more natural in conversation is:

    I look round and see that we've got more people watching us than the bears.
