"dot i's and cross the t's"

I see its literal meaning-put a dot on each "i" and a cross on each "t", but I don't really get its metaphorical meaning. Maybe-finish smth or do it properly, all the way to the end...

it's a saying which means that if you made sure your work is flawless (or you made sure there aren't any mistakes), you can rest easy that you did your best and move on.
