    Default The Darkling Thrush

    Hello,

Could you please rephrase the marked words for me and tell me if my rewording is correct?

I leant upon a coppice gate When Frost was spectre-gray,(As gray as a ghost)And Winter's dregs made (sad) desolate The weakening eye of day.The tangled bine-stems scored the sky Like strings of broken lyres,And all mankind that haunted nigh(lived or wandered) Had sought (Had gone to) their household fires.(a mantel or one's home or home and family life.)
