2. What I said was what in the long run convinced him to help you (He was to become an accomplished painter. )
This is one possible interpretation; the context would make this clear. It's not necessary to have the idea of 'in the long run'.
3. What I said convinced him to help you.
If that was your message, then that is what you would probably have said.
