Does "read them off your hand" mean "read something on your hand" or "read something that fell off your hand"?

The character is complaining that his friend is not passing on the phone messages he gets while he's out. He's saying that it's not good enough for his friend to just scribble the messages onto his hand and then fall asleep on the couch. That's how I see it.
