Is there a difference between "a lost person" and "a missing person"?

Can one say:
1-He is lost.
instead of:
2-He is missing.

Default Re: lost

If a person is lost, he doesn't know where he is.

If a person is missing, other people don't know where he (the missing person) is. [The missing person may want to be missing.]

If a thing is missing it is an inclusive term that could mean lost, stolen, misplaced or moved for some other reason.
