I take it as meaning that the driver kept coming to the end of a road, turning onto another one, coming to the end of that, turning onto another one, and so on, for what seemed like a very long time.

The writer likens this to the way a telescope is constructed in sections that make it longer. Using the word 'infernal' makes us imagine that the telescope sections keep being pulled out, one after another, without ever ending. You could say it was a nightmarish drive.
