I have difficulty understanding the first sentence of the following passage.

Would you please do me a favor?

[Carson McCuller never reworte the front pages to brand them novels.] Althugh she was concerned about the barbarism of racism in her native South, her short stories and novels were allegorical, yet crystalline.

It isn't very clear to me from the text there. Could you supply more context? It sounds as if she didn't try to hard-sell her books as novels.

I think it means that McCuller did not fictionalize real current events and make novels out of them.
