Before the class started I talked to him for half an hour, he said unless his son is 18 he won't leave the country.
Is it badly worded?

The second sentence is not clear.

Before the class started I talked to him for half an hour. He said he is not leaving the country unless his son turns 18.
It looks like the former is a lot better than the later..
