as the day ... on
As the day wore/went/moved/drew/dragged/grew/got on, things didn't improve very much.
Do all the verbs above work for the sentence?

For me, grew on definitely does not work; drew on does not sound very natural. I suspect, however, that I would not notice them if I heard or read them in a longer passage. The others are fine.
