Default the theory undergoes or sutains changes?

"The theory can be assumed to have undergone no substantial changes." Would it be OK to structure the sentence like that in writing?

No. You can sustain something clearly unpleasant, like a wound or loss.

The question is, whose theory are we talking about? Einstein would have talked about Newton's and Euclid's theories having to undergo/withstand/sustain change. When a passive conceals the agent, it seems to me to be a good idea to express it differently.

I don't have the context. We were supposed to translate sentences for next class. "Sustain" would have been incorrect to use in that sentence? Does "sustain" imply a negative meaning?

Yes, sustain has a negative connotation. The army sustained casualties in the conflict, the town sustained damage from the tornedo.

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
