is a little odd as it implies the causality of loss of species>deforestation, rather than the other way around.

I think what freezeframe said about "connected" is also right about "related". This is from Macmillan dictionary:

Harcourt's lawyer claims that his client's health problems are directly related to his work in the mine.

I don't say that any of your sentences is wrong but I'd rather put "the loss of many species" in the beginning of the sentence. Perhaps In this way you can recognise the cause and the effect more easily.
