I was thinking about your sentence and make this conclusion:
It's wrong because: "...because of being very busy" is not correct at all
I use "because of" to introduce a reason about a thing or a person, but never a verb (the "because" . I would say your sentence as the follow:
We didn’t keep in touch for ages because we have been very busy’
I hope this would help you to your students.
