I wouldn't read it as your first two options. I'd go with "getting rid of him".

That refers to doing something that you thought would be difficult to do:
- Convincing your brother to loan you his car...
- Your mid-term exam...
- Passing through Airport Customs...
- Changing the baby's diaper...
- Getting someone off the phone...
