I'd like to know whether it's acceptable to speak of 'dropping' a rule. As the text in question is meant for non-native speakers, I'd rather use that than 'abandoning' or 'revoking'. However, it IS a formal text, so usage must be correct.

It might depend on the context, but generally speaking "dropping a rule" is OK.
