    Default as well as

    Hi,

What does this phrase in this sentence mean; is it idiomatic?

You must deposit $500 as well as the first month's rent.

    Thanks a lot

Do I need to take out "as well" in the sentence?

hi, It is idiomatic. Means "and also" , "and in addition" , but what do you mean by taking out?

I meant if the sentence would be better if I put it in this way:

You must deposit $500 as the first month's rent.

I don't quite understand the "as well as" in the sentence.

faryan explained this in post #2. You must pay the first month's rent. In addition, you must pay $500.

The $500 is a "security deposit" to insure against damage you may make to the rental unit during your occupancy. At the end of the rental period, if there is no damage, you should get the entire deposit back. If there is damage, the landlord can pay for the repairs from your deposit and refund you any that is left over.
