In print, guns are described as .22, .38, .45 etc.
In speech, however, the decimal point is never mentioned.
What is the origin of this practice?

I assume it's for brevity's sake. Who wants to say "point twenty two" if you can say "twenty two"?
And why the 'point' before 'blank'. Imagine someone being shot with a point 22 at blank range?![]()
