Default leave one's pearl in the shell

What does this mean exactly?

I think it might suggest that you don't use your full potential.
Am i right?

The "pearl" could represent a person's talent, character, or personality that is not being used or shown to the world. A man could be a great artist, but believe it is not a way to make a living. He might not see value in his talent. If a girl is very shy, others can not see her true character or personality. It is hidden in her shell.

Thank you Supergirl

Under his nose was a dream come true
Been there all the time and he almost knew
Thoughts of people in misfortune stopped him doing things well
His duty was to use it - left his pearl in the shell

These are song lyrics by Howard Jones
