As others said, this isn't something that is done in our culture. You can transliterate the word from your language and explain what it is. Bribe wouldn't be a correct translation as a bribe is something negative.

Its a traditional culture that is still followed in India to offer something as a gift (not neccessarly money) before you start enrolling for an extra curricular education. Usually the teacher blesses the student after receiving the gift. When the student finishes his/her education, once again he/she will offer an other gift to the teacher as a symbol of thanksgiving!. Not all people follows this culture.
