    Hi,

    What does this sentence mean?

They warmed their hands by the open fire

Can anyone tell me the meaning of "by the open fire"?

An open fire is a fire that's not enclosed, like a camp fire.

    *Not a teacher

They started a fire and put their cold hands above the fire to warm up.

Does it mean "They warmed their hands by closing to a braizer or some heating devices"? Is it possible?

    Thanks a lot

No, a fire is a fire. Not an electric heater or a barbecue grill.
