Can people say "in the larger community nearby"?

Hello, everyone.

This usage sounds a bit odd for me.

I know people can say things like This community is larger. or This community is the largest. It's also right to say I work for a bank in the largest community nearby.

I am just not sure whether the word the and a comparative goes well in the same phrase.

That changed somewhat when I began working in a bank in the larger community nearby.

Yes, you can do that. "The larger community neaby" means the community nearby to where I live, or where I worked before, which is larger than the one I was in before.
If you have a choice of two things, one which is bigger, you can say, "I'll take the larger one." In any comparison of two things, this is the right way to say it. If you have three or more, you have to say, "the largest one".
