Hello!
I'm practising reported speech and in my book I found two sentences that puzzled me. They are:
"I didn't know you smoked"
"I didn't know it was your birthday"
I know that the verbs smoke and be are correct in the simple past, but I don't know why. These sentences don't look like reported speech to me. I mean, you're not reporting anything someone said before. I can't see the relationship with the reported speech.
Can you tell me?
Thanks!
