    Default lift the embarrassment

How to express the following idea in a natural way?
If someone who did something awkward, then he had to adjust to acting according to circumstances. What he had to do is to suddenly hit upon a way out of a predicament or to lift the embarrassment..

There's a phrase "to save face" (see meaning 53).

What kind of thing did the person do? There are more specific expressions, depending on what you mean.

Edit: the opposite of this expression is "to lose face" (see meaning 49 in the above link).

    Ashiuhto.
People usually try to avoid embarrassment.
"It was a terrible haircut and he wore a hat all day to avoid embarrassment".
"He realised he'd been rude and apologized immediately to avoid any further embarrassment".
"He said he'd been mugged, to avoid the embarrassment of admitting he'd lost the money at the races".

Imagine someone is dancing on the stage. During her performance, something awkward happened. She fall down unexpectedly. To save face, she had to keep dancing and tried to hit upon a way out of the embarrassment.

Note: The above is not a proper English sentence or question:
"How to do X?" does not have a finite verb. It's a dependent clause without a main clause.
