I made up the following examples. Hope someone can tell me if this is the correct way to use 'my heart sinks':

When I heard that both his father and sister died in the crash, my heart sank and didn't know what to say to him.

My heart sinks when I know the wedding is cancelled.

My heart sinks to know that the wedding is cancelled.

And, it'd be great if someone can give me more examples as of how to use it! Many thanks!

If these, I prefer the second- we tend to use this phrase after an event, but it can be used in the present. The trouble with the first is that it is unclear because the grammar suggests a repeated event:

My heart sinks when they cancel their wedding (suggests that they have done this more than once)
