    Default if it were

Which of the following option is acceptable, was or were?

Have you eve thought about what we would do without electricity? If it happened, what would the world be like? It would lead to serious consequences. The following are the disastrous effects if there ___________ (was, were) no electricity.

Both are possible in BrE, and 'was' is more common. Purists insist that only subjunctive 'were' is correct.
