think it Why #1 is acceptable, and #2 is not acceptable? Please explain for me.
(1) We thought it our duty to take care of the orphans.
(2) We thought it is our duty to take care of the orphans.

There's another possibility, one with tense:
(3) We thought + CLAUSE
We though it was our duty.
