    Default think it

Why #1 is acceptable, and #2 is not acceptable? Please explain for me.

    (1) We thought it our duty to take care of the orphans.
    (2) We thought it is our duty to take care of the orphans.

    (1) We thought it our duty to take care of the orphans.
    (2) We thought it is our duty to take care of the orphans.
We are dealing with a copular structure:

    (1) We thought it (to be) our duty.

The omitted verb 'to be' lacks tense. The verb in (2) has tense:

    (2) We thought it is our duty.

There's another possibility, one with tense:

    (3) We thought + CLAUSE
We though it was our duty.

    A possibility:
We thought: "It is our duty to take care of the orphans."
