Dear all,
What is the meaning of "play away to" in:
[His first two seasons for the Blaugranas were a roaring success, but they were also marred by racist chants by opposition fans, most notably when playing away to Real Zaragoza]
Does it mean "against"??
Thanks.
It means being the "away" team, rather than the "home" team. Playing in the other teams' stadium, that is. Playing on the road.
So it anyway implies the meaning of "playing gainst" but the point is that it's not on their statdium! coz when I translate, I can't say like "they met Real Madrid club on their stadium" as if Real has a certain stadium. Can you get me?
Thanks a lot for the explanation, I got it.
I was just thinking aloud, may be you have another opinion.![]()
You play in a stadium.
In your travels you may come across a metaphorical use of 'play away'. It can be used for a breach of sexual loyalty: 'He didn't know his wife had been playing away, so he assumed the baby was his'.

maiabulela.
Just to continue with SD's response.
Your example says Real Zaragoza, not Real Madrid, but both those clubs do have their own home stadiums. RZ are at La Romareda and RM are at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. So any team that travels to play at one of those stadiums is "playing away", while the Real team (whichever one it is) is "playing at home".
