Dear teacher,


Frequency was measured in VCCV contexts. Sequences were tallied in all prosodic
contexts (either the first vowel, the second vowel, or neither vowel could have
been stressed.)

I would like to make sure what the second sentence means. Apparantly, it includes three cases: (1)only the first vowel is stressed, (2) only the second vowel is stressed and (3) neither the first vowel and the second vowel is stressed. Does it also include the fourth possibility, in which both the first and the second vowel are stressed?

Note: V is the abbreviation of "vowel" and C is that of "consonant".

There wouldn't be a fourth possibility. The phrase 'could have been stressed' refers to primary stress, right?

I guess stress refers to primary stress in that paper.
However, since it is not specified, I am not sure.
English has no adjacent syllables that receive primary stress. But the sequence of primary-secondary or secondary-primary is possible.....
