Which sentence would you go for?

Neither, I would use ""The data calculated by this scientist has been included in the article".

I've read that "the data" is usually used with plural verbs in technical and scientific writing. Is this information accurate?

No. Some writers favour a plural data, some a singular.

This depends on the discipline and/or the publication style guide. The plural data makes more sense (to me) when used in sciences and/or quantitative analysis.
