Non-verbal nouns are not derived from verbs and they denote objects rather than events. For example, the noun "expectation" comes from the verb "expect" + the suffx "-tion", so it's not a non-verbal noun. The noun "swimming" as in "Swimming is fun" denotes an event rather than an object, so it's not a non-verbal noun. In that context, "Swimming" functions as a gerund, a verbal noun.
