Through this short story, the writer tackles the idea of corruption of authority. She shows the policemen in Nigeria, who are supposed to obey the law and be models to all people, are morally corrupted and always break the law. They are ready to do anything, even if it is against law, for money. When, for example, Nnambia has been arrested, his mother has to bribe the policemen with money, jollof rice, and meat in order to let her son come out of his cell and sit with his family. Moreover, Nnambia has to pay them some money to avoid troubles and buy his peace in the cell. The cell itself is very dirty and uncomfortable regardless of the fact that it is a place for human beings. Nnambia says that the prisoners are even deprived of the bathing water except those who can afford buying it. The toilet is too full; they flush it only on Saturday. What is more worth is that when they do not find the guilty person, they arrest any one of his family. The old man is a clear example of this corruption. He is unjustly locked up instead of his son, for the police cannot find his son who is wanted for robbery. Also, the policemen completely have the ability to kill people without punishing. This is appeared through the policeman's speech with Nnambia's mother; he tells her " you are lucky, madam, very lucky that they released him.
